Best Built Brands for High-Performance Laptops?

I’m considering purchasing a 4080 or 4090 laptop with at least 32GB of RAM. While I prefer to spend less, my budget is flexible, ideally within the $2k to $4k range. I’m looking for something akin to a portable desktop, even if it weighs around 10lbs. I’d opt for a desktop but I’m rarely home.

Just bought a Legion Pro 7i with a 4080 for $2k. It seems to fit your requirements.

I purchased it from a well-known online retailer.

I returned my Legion Pro 7i 4090 and switched to a ROG Strix, which has much better cooling. If your budget can stretch to $4k, you might consider a Legion Pro 9. The case was nice on the 7i Pro, but the keyboard got uncomfortably hot.

Consider the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 16-18 depending on how large you want the screen.

For larger screens, consider the ROG Strix SCAR 18 from ASUS or MSI Titan 18. For something more portable but slightly less powerful, look at the Lenovo Legion Pro or ROG Zephyrus G16. Notably, I’d be cautious with Acer Predator Helios 18, Alienware M18 R1, and Razer Blade 18.

Can you elaborate on why you wouldn’t rank the Alienware or Razer higher?

Razer tends to be overpriced for what it offers, and in my experience, Alienware hasn’t matched the reliability of ASUS models.

Both Alienware and Razer are significantly more expensive for similar specs.

I opted for the ROG over Razer because some reviews indicated Razer had issues with thermal throttling. It’s crucial to prioritize cooling with a 4090 laptop.

Razer’s after-sales support is lacking, and finding OEM parts for their products is notoriously difficult.

For sheer performance, consider a MSI Titan or a ROG Strix model. If you’re willing to trade some performance for better screen quality, build quality, battery life, and speakers, the Zephyrus G16 or the Razer Blade 16 are excellent choices.

@Pace
The G16’s GPU is slightly less powerful at 115W, but the Blade’s full 175W GPU doesn’t compromise on performance. Check out my TimeSpy scores from a post I made last year; they’re some of the highest for 16" laptops that I’ve seen outside of mods.

@Aki
However, the Blade is often out of stock and very expensive.

Yes, this year’s model is excellent and sells out quickly. They’re also not produced as quickly as other brands. It’s one of the few high-powered gaming PCs available with an OLED screen.

Aren’t MSI laptops known to be unreliable?

That’s more true for their budget models. Their high-end laptops generally offer good performance.

Their premium models are quite reliable.

@Pace
You actually sacrifice quite a lot in terms of performance with the Zephyrus models.
