Desktop CPU in an Old Laptop - A Surprising Find

I was cleaning my girlfriend’s laptop, which she recently received from her dad. To my surprise, it was already spotless when I opened it up. I decided to repaste it using some leftover thermal paste I had, and I discovered something quite unusual inside. It’s not something I’ve come across in any other laptops I’ve worked on. Thought it was worth sharing here!

That seems to be an i9 9900k, which is pretty impressive for a laptop.

Definitely looks like a 9900K. You can make out the markings if you zoom in on the picture.

That’s really cool!

I once had a Clevo laptop with an 11900k. Needed two 280W chargers to power it, but it was a powerhouse.

I have a similar model, albeit with a 10900F. Sounds like a jet engine at full speed, but it’s a powerhouse indeed.

For some reason, I can’t edit this post. As some of you guessed, it’s an i9 9900K. The laptop is from a brand called ‘BTO’ and it has a Nvidia Quadro P3200.

That would have been a high-end workstation back in the day!

Is this an Alienware laptop?

I forgot which CPU it is; I’m still in the middle of cleaning. All I remember is that it ends with ‘K’.

Is this laptop by Alienware or is it an older Clevo/Tongfang chassis?

It’s from a European brand called ‘BTO’.

With a 95W TDP, cooling this CPU in a laptop chassis must be quite challenging.

The downside is that this laptop is only compatible with this specific generation of CPUs.

This looks like an Alienware Area-51 M r2 with an i9-9900k. Up until five years ago, there were customized laptops from various brands that used desktop CPUs, but nowadays, they’re all soldered onto the motherboard to reduce size and enhance compactness.

This reminds me of the Alienware laptops with the same CPU, but they ran really hot.

Which legendary laptop is this?

More info: BTO is a Dutch brand that specializes in custom-built laptops for gaming and business. This particular laptop was designed for rendering. The brand is still active and continues to build custom systems.

@Merritt
It’s likely that the chassis is made by Tongfang or Clevo, and BTO just brands it under their name.

What laptop is this? Asking for a friend who’s interested.
