As the title says, do you guys cap your game’s framerates or play at unlocked fps? I just upgraded to my first RTX 4060 gaming laptop and was wondering if capping fps will increase my laptop’s longevity as it doesn’t 100% stress the CPU and GPU and keeps thermals in control. To be more specific, I am mostly talking about single-player story games, not multiplayer games. What are your opinions on this?
Yes, I cap my fps. There’s a significant difference in CPU temperature between playing at over 100 fps and 60 fps. I choose longevity.

But 100+ fps just looks and feels so smooth.
@Teagan
Yes, but not long ago I was coping with a 1060 3GB averaging below 60 fps, so I’m happy now just to reach 60 fps with my new machine.

I understand. Most games I play start at 60 fps with high settings, but I usually lower them a bit to get 90 to 120 fps because it feels better, even if the graphics are slightly less amazing.

Where do you choose to cap the fps? Capping at 60 fps through the Nvidia control panel causes stuttering in my games.
@Fin
I cap it in-game usually. There’s also a good option through Rivatuner that comes with MSI Afterburner. It’s the best because it doesn’t give you input lag.

Rivaturner caused my PC to act weird several times, probably because I run too many windows open while gaming.
@Fin
You don’t just cap; you enable V-sync through the control panel and switch the screen to 60 Hz when gaming.
Capping fps can indeed make your CPU and GPU work less and maintain lower temperatures. You don’t need to worry too much about longevity due to high temps; both CPU and GPU have built-in protections and more, ensuring components aren’t damaged.
@Drew
After checking my 3DMark TimeSpy results, I noticed that my CPU ran at 136 Celsius degrees once. Is that a bug, do you think?

Yes, that’s definitely a bug. Temperatures over 115°C would cause an instant shutdown for protection. Various manufacturers set different thresholds, but it’s generally lower. 3DMark and other monitoring tools sometimes show incorrect values.
I cap my framerate at 144 fps because my screen’s refresh rate is 144 Hz. There’s no benefit to having the GPU push frames past what the screen can display.

The benefit of higher fps than your refresh rate is lower input latency.
@Paxton
It’s a very slight difference, but for esports games, you can never have too many fps.

I can definitely feel the difference between capped and uncapped fps in games like Fortnite, so I never cap it.
@Paxton
Input latency issues can be resolved in other ways, such as enabling V-sync or adjusting FOV settings in games to not surpass 110. In my experience, these adjustments work well, though individual results may vary.
@Bell
V-sync adds latency, though…

You’re mixing things up; it’s completely irrelevant to this discussion. Moreover, you are incorrect about what you’re saying.

It’s frustrating how people downvote comments about topics they don’t understand without explaining their reasoning. If you’re going to downvote, at least explain why, even though your reasoning is likely incorrect.
