You should be fine if you don’t play more than 12 games
Or COD

Well, if that’s the only title you play you’ll be ok.
At the start you get around 400-450 but like 6 months on as your app data builds it’s more like 300-350
If it isn’t enough space for your needs, throw in an additional SSD. Problem solved.

Could the SSD be external? Could I play games from there?
Not much but if you have 1 or 2 games installed then you are good to go.
Assuming you’re buying a laptop with a spare slot then just buy another 1TB drive. Here in the UK (by no means the cheapest place for tech) they cost around £60 - so about the price of a new game and a fraction of the overall cost of a laptop.
512 is only enough if you play either a few big games or multiple small games. I have 500 rn and I got 4 relatively big games and like 6 smaller ones
Imho 1TB is minimum nowadays. I’ve bought my laptop with 512GB and then realised I only have 3 games and my disk is done. Had to buy a second SSD (gladly there’s second NVMe slot too)
Hell, even on Steam Deck 1TB is not enough for me.
