Keep Laptop and Sell Desktop? Keep Desktop and Sell Laptop? Keep Both? Argh!

Is just having one device the way forward? Is two wasteful? I flip flop between either. My desktop is old but still powerful thanks to it having a 1080. I could just upgrade the GPU and be golden again. My laptop has a 4060, which is okay, mainly thanks to DLSS and ray tracing. It’s really good in terms of power, heat, and noise (it’s an AMD Legion 5 Slim) for a laptop. But I do wonder how long it will last. I’ve never owned a gaming laptop before this one.

I’m considering keeping the desktop and buying a Steam Deck instead of the laptop. I do use the laptop around the house occasionally, but mainly I use it at my desk hooked up to my screen. I wonder about getting a cheap notebook or tablet instead but think that might be more wasteful.

Who has both a desktop and gaming laptop?

‘‘1080 is still powerful’’ I’m tired, boss.

Steam Deck will be quite a lot slower than your laptop, so keep that in mind. If the laptop is powerful enough to be stronger than your PC, maybe just keep the laptop and connect it to your monitor when you are at your desk.

Do you have any money problems or needs? If you don’t, I’d say keep them both. Just in case you need to travel and want to bring it for work/gaming.

You may want to buy a Steam Deck and keep the desktop. Or, if money allows, keep all three, lol. I have a PS5, a Steam Deck OLED, and I’m still buying a laptop.

This is why I went with a laptop too.

I have a 3080 Ti laptop and a 4090 desktop. The purpose of the laptop is so that I can still game while also being in bed next to my girlfriend. I’m not joking.

Is there nothing else you could be doing with your hands? Or lap?

I personally decided to stick with a laptop because my wife and I travel between Canada and Brazil every 6 months. I am tired of buying everything twice.

I currently have a Legion Slim 7 2021 (R7 5800H and 3060) and a desktop (i5 13500 and 3070). Sometimes I feel it’s wasteful to have both, but now I’m not. My laptop broke, and if I didn’t have the desktop, I couldn’t do my work on time.

I have a 4080 super PC (7800X3D) and a 4060 ROG Zephyrus laptop. I couldn’t part with either, personally.

I’m sure your CPU will bottleneck a 4060 if you never upgraded it. The Steam Deck really doesn’t offer much.

My situation is complicated! I have a desktop 6700K and GTX 1080 Ti, which barely runs newer AAA titles. Trying to give it away to family but no one wants a big desktop. My laptop is a 12700H 3070 Ti, which I can use for work, but I regret getting a gaming laptop.

Update the PC and keep your laptop. It’s useful to have both.

Just use the laptop; it performs better, draws less power, and is portable.

Neither is really good enough for 4K gaming, and selling won’t net you much. I was thinking about selling my desktop when I got my ThinkPad with a 3080, but it is nice to have that power.

Desktop is upgradable.

Use your laptop as a desktop until you can get the desktop you deserve. Your 4060 is more powerful than the 1080.
