The thermal paste

I spilled water on my laptop and let all the components air dry, which also meant removing the cooler. Now I want to reapply the thermal paste. Should I apply the thermal paste on the white thermal pad as well, or just on the grey area? I’m planning to clean everything first!

Bro, how far did the water reach? Did it touch the motherboard? Also was the power on during that time?

Not sure how far the water got, but it all went inside the laptop. I kept it upside down to let everything drain out and dried what I could. It turns on now, but I have a test today. I’m planning to do a small cleanup and let it sit for another 1 to 2 days before using it again.

Alright, you were lucky this time. I knew someone who had their laptop ruined by water damage. Good luck with the cleanup! As far as I remember, thermal paste should go on the CPU/GPU, not on the heatsink. Check out YouTube for more detailed instructions.

Do you know how to apply thermal paste?

I haven’t done it myself, but I’ve seen tutorials on YouTube. Please check those out for guidance. You’ll need to clean off the old thermal paste with alcohol before applying a new layer, and make sure to use the right amount. Again, YouTube will have the details you need.
