When you visit Best Buy to purchase a new gaming laptop

Once while buying parts, the salesperson started discussing RAM needs for coding and suggested 32GB. I was holding 64GB, mentioning future-proofing, and he realized I was building a gaming PC. He then recommended a high refresh rate monitor.

Sometimes, salespeople mix genuine help with sales pitches, pushing for pricier options you might not need. I prefer buying online to avoid unnecessary upselling.

As a former Best Buy employee, I can say we were mostly trying to be helpful, despite a few overly confident colleagues.

@Wade
Honestly, 64GB of RAM might be overkill for just gaming unless you’re planning on heavy multitasking or future tech developments.

Consider games like Star Citizen that are extremely demanding.

@Phoenix
You might even need 128GB for games like that!

The gaming laptop selection at Best Buy is often limited, pushing most high-end models to be online orders only. Unlike the old days where stores had vast displays, now, places like Micro Center feel more like what Best Buy used to be.

@Val
Absolutely, Micro Center has that old-school electronic store feel that Best Buy has lost. I’ve switched to Micro Center for all my tech purchases.

It’s unfortunate that Micro Center isn’t more widespread. It offers a better experience but isn’t as accessible as Best Buy.

Does anyone know if Fry’s Electronics is still around?

Last year, my dad replaced my broken laptop charger with a laptop that wasn’t worth the cost. He thought it had a newer AMD CPU, but it was an older model. It’s been sluggish ever since.

Was returning it not an option?

@Linden
I’d feel bad returning a gift from my dad.

Perhaps you could have worked with him to find a better suited laptop?

Exactly, it’s better to communicate and get something that meets your needs.

@Linden
It’s complicated with my dad’s personal issues; he wouldn’t handle the return well.

I was at a Best Buy in New Jersey looking for a powerful laptop for gaming and graphic design. I considered an Alienware or Lenovo Legion, but the salesperson kept trying to sell me a Mac or a Microsoft Surface.

@Case
Here’s some advice: steer clear of Alienware, pushy salespeople, and maybe even New Jersey.

Ended up with an Alienware that suits my needs, but thanks for the laugh!
