Lol, my laptop 3080 has 16GB VRAM.

It’s ridiculous how the 30 series mobile GPUs had decent VRAM, and then Nvidia went ahead and nerfed the 40 series. What a joke!

Actually, the 4000 series mobile GPUs have the same VRAM capacity as the desktop chips they’re based on. They’re not massively cut down like the 2000 and 3000 series were. The issue is more with naming schemes than specs.
@Glenn
Agreed, they’re not cut down as much as previous gens, but Nvidia should’ve named them after the desktop chips instead of using confusing performance tiers. It’s misleading to call them 4090 or 4080 when they’re not exactly the same.
@Glenn
Honestly, I’d rather have a slightly cut-down 4070 with 12GB VRAM than a so-called ‘4070’ with just 8GB.

Fair point, but Nvidia has always done this. The heart of the issue is the naming scheme, not necessarily the specs. If they just labeled them correctly, it would make things a lot clearer.
@Glenn
The laptop 4090 has 16GB VRAM compared to the desktop’s 24GB.

True, but the mobile 4090 uses the same AD103 die as the desktop 4080. It’s all about the die they’re based on, not the name.

When I got my 3080 16GB laptop a few years ago, I thought the extra VRAM was overkill. Now with AI tools, it’s been super useful!

Same here. Mine’s still holding up great even though I upgraded to a 4080 desktop. The extra VRAM makes a big difference.

I switched to a desktop, but my 3080 16GB laptop was amazing while I used it.
Looks like Nvidia is pulling the same trick again, using the RTX 5080 chip for their flagship mobile GPU and calling it the 5090. They’ll probably go with 16GB VRAM instead of 32GB, which is disappointing. Definitely skipping this gen and waiting for Intel Battlemage or AMD to step up.
@Skyler
I’m waiting to see what Radeon 8000M series mobile GPUs bring to the table.

AMD could be an option, but in my country, laptops with AMD GPUs are nearly impossible to find. Nvidia dominates here.
@Skyler
It’s just a naming issue. They could call them what they actually are, like adding an ‘M’ at the end for mobile chips, but they choose to confuse consumers instead.
This generation seems even worse than the RTX 4000 series.
Does this mean the RTX 4090 laptop is a better deal right now?

If you find a good deal on a fully loaded 4090 laptop, go for it. It’s likely to be similar in performance to the 5080.
The 5090 laptop sticking to 16GB VRAM and 175W TGP is disappointing. And the 5070 still gets 8GB VRAM? That’s even worse. Nvidia needs competition to push them to do better.
