Should I wait for the 5090s or buy a 4090 laptop now?

Consider the cooling solutions and TDP improvements in the upcoming models. The 5090 is expected to set new performance benchmarks, which could be worth the wait if you prioritize top-tier performance.

@Kim
It’s true that the TDP ratings are expected to remain similar for the 5080-5090, but even without significant increases in power consumption, the performance improvements could be substantial.

If you’re not in urgent need of an upgrade, waiting a bit could potentially offer you better value and performance. Consider how the 4080 laptops perform and weigh that against the expected capabilities of the 5090.

Prices for the 5090 laptops will likely be very high at launch. If budget isn’t a constraint, waiting could allow you to compare directly between the 4090 and 5090 models once reviews are out.

If you find a good deal on a 4090 laptop now, it might be worth considering, especially if the 5090 turns out to be much more expensive without a proportional increase in performance.

Just a few more months and we’ll have a clearer picture of how the 4090 stacks up against the 5090. It might be worth waiting to make an informed decision.

Be cautious with the current generation of Intel processors; there have been issues. If you can, it might be safer to wait for the next generation, which is rumored to address these problems.

We’re leaning towards AMD for our next upgrade, primarily due to better performance and thermal management.

Wait for the 5090 to release and see how it performs. If it’s too pricey or not significantly better, the 4090 will still be a great choice.

Consider waiting for the 5090s to release, then check the second-hand market for 4090 laptops as prices may drop.

If you prefer a larger screen, consider the G16 with a 4090. It’s compact but offers more screen real estate than the G14, making it a good compromise between performance and portability.

I appreciate the suggestion, but we’re really looking for something highly portable, and the G14 seems like the best fit for our needs.

If you’re not in a rush, waiting for the AMD models might be a wise choice. They’re typically more efficient, which could be crucial for travel and use on the go.

Consider the 4080 for a balance of cost and performance. It’s less likely to be thermally throttled than the 4090, offering good performance without the overheating issues.

That’s a great point. The 4070 might also be a good fit for our needs, giving us a solid upgrade without going overboard on power we might not fully utilize.

A 4090 is quite powerful for most tasks. If the upcoming 5090 series doesn’t offer a significant boost over the 4090, you might find that the 4090 meets all your needs.

That’s true. We mainly use our laptops for moderate gaming and travel, so a 4090 might well suffice. Waiting to compare the new series does seem prudent, though.

Are you sure you can’t hold out with your current setup a little longer? The new releases might be worth the wait if you’re looking for a significant upgrade.

We could, but we have an upcoming work project abroad, and it would be great to have a new, lighter laptop for travel.

If you can wait, the G14 with a 5080 or the G16 with a 5090 might be worth holding out for, depending on their release dates and your travel plans.
