Which is better at $1,100

Lenovo Legion 5i Specs

  • Intel Core i9-14900HX
  • 16" 2560 x 1600 IPS 240 Hz Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 (8GB GDDR6)

Omen 16

  • Intel Core i7 14700HX
  • 16" 1920 x 1080 IPS 165Hz Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Graphics Card

MSI Katana

  • Intel Core i7-13620H
  • 15.6" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz IPS Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (8GB GDDR6)

All have 32GB ram and 1TB storage

My understanding of each laptop: Lenovo will have the best build quality, Omen will have the best performance but the worst screen, and MSI will have the worst build quality but the best paper specs.

I guess I’m looking for opinions the difference in build quality and if the omen’s 4070 is worth it considering the worse screen. I personally value build quality and consider a consistent 60fps fine, so I’m leaning on the Lenovo, but there may be bigger gaps in performance/quality/etc. than I realize.

How does the MSI have best paper specs? CPU is less powerful, GPU seems to be the same as one other (see the last paragraph), and Lenovo screen seems to be better, at least on paper. Plus these days 16:10 ratio screens (16" ones in your list) are preferred by most.

Except, the HX CPUs are possibly at risk of failure due to Intel issues, which neither Lenovo nor most other manufacturers don’t want to do anything about, so you should take that into account.

Have you checked the GPU power limits? Do both 4070s have the same TGP?

@Teal
I think I would consider it the best paper since the screen is better. Power limits are a bit variable, but all have the limits above 100TGP. MSI is 105 and the others are 120+. My understanding is performance caps around the 100 100 TGP mark

@Ben
>I think I would consider it the best paper since the screen is better.

It’s better than the Omen’s but not the Lenovo’s, based on your information (there may be other screen capabilities that make it better but it’s not seen in the post).

>MSI is 105 and the others are 120+. My understanding is performance caps around the 100 100 TGP mark

Yeah, that may be the case but I’m not sure, I think I was told in some comment here on Reddit that there has been some improvement in 2024 but probably not that much. Still, I’m not sure/don’t know if the version with lower TGP will still perform the same at the same power levels below 100W. It’s possible that as MSI’s cooling is probably designed taking into account lower TGP, the Omen with higher TGP 4070 could perform better, if it is also designed according to its power limits. This is just speculation, however, because I have no idea about how good HP/Omen’s cooling/thermals is (or the others’ in this case).

And I think the difference between 4060 and 4070 is still something to take into account, especially at the same price ))

To be clear, I’m not trying to convince you one way or another, just adding my 2 cents :slightly_smiling_face:. Granted, I think I might have an unbased prejudice against MSI :grinning: but in this case it’s not about that, I think it’s objectively worse than the others in most aspects.

@Ben
The MSI laptop is dog shit :poop:, shit build quality, and 10:9 screen ratio. I’ll take a 16-inch laptop any day over a 15.6-inch screen.

First one, despite having a 4060, the performance difference between a 4060 and a 4070 is about 10%, you can choose to get the Omen if you want, but you may not like the 1080p display.

@Kade
I have seen others make that same claim that the difference is only 10% and it not true, it’s more than that.

yea, there are many people making wrong claims about this, literally throwing misinformation at newbies

I got my 4070 for a good price so I had to get it

Here is my order 1) Omen 16 2) MSI Katana 3) Lenovo Legion 5i

  • Omen 16’s CPU and GPU are nice, but that screen is bit of a turn off.
  • MSI Katana is nice if you want a better screen with a hit to the CPU performance.
  • Lenovo Legion 5i is last because I learned a long time ago that GPU is king, everything else comes second.

Avoid MSI.

This has been a public service announcement.

Whats the screen brightness on the Omen? How many nits?

300 nits. My current laptop is 300 nits as well, so I can live with it. The Lenovo is 500 nits which is nice. Can’t find the nits on the Katana

@Ben
Katana is a budget model and it’s MSI so no thank you. Imma go with the omen 16 cuz 300 nits is more than enough for most usage imo. 4070 vs 4060 is a no-brainer (14700hx vs 14900hx difference is minimal). The only reason you should consider the Legion is if you play more fps games (where settings are all low and what matters is screen refresh rate and fps)

@Case
yeah id get the Omen as well

@Ben
There is no way that the MSI laptop has better paper specs than any of the other laptops. The processor is an H model. And the build quality is absolutely shit.

Personally I would go with the Omen for the better perf

Omen Has better performance but the Legion just feels so much more premium and the screen is like you said way better resolution, which I find very noticeable at 16 inch.

Would you mind sharing Omen link please?
